Last August, the corner of South Third Street and Logan Avenue South was a gravel lot. This August, it is where most of downtown Renton spends its Saturday evenings. The City of Renton started work on the future Legacy Square in the summer of 2024, located at the gravel lot on S. Third Street and Logan Avenue South. Legacy Square is officially open as of June 6, and the schedule the city built around it runs on a rhythm worth learning if you live within walking, biking, or a short drive of the downtown core.
The thesis of this post is simple. Between now and mid-September, the most interesting weekend in Renton is a two-block loop: the Square itself, Piazza Park directly across the street, and the storefronts stitched between them. If your default late-summer reflex is to drive north to Bellevue or south to Kent for something to do, the case for staying put has changed.
The Two-Block Loop That Wasn't There Last August
The Square is not a plaza dropped into a parking lot. It is engineered for the way people actually use a public space on a warm evening. The Stage is a performance shell and 15-ft large-format screen, perfect for arts and cultural performances, movie screenings, sporting events, and more. The mass timber structure is designed to optimize view lines to the screen and supports natural acoustic projection. The stage will also play host to musical guests and performers for a uniquely Renton experience. There is a soccer mini-pitch contributed by the RAVE Foundation, a playground, and shaded seating that fills in around the event lawn.
The scale of the investment matters here. The $2.8 million overhaul of Piazza Park creates the essential "outdoor lobby" for the Renton Market and a seamless pedestrian experience. In plain terms: the Farmers Market on Tuesdays and the Square's weekend programming are now two halves of the same room, not competing amenities on opposite ends of downtown.
Saturday Night Belongs to the Stage
The Saturday concert series has an intentional shape. "Any Friday-Saturday night beyond the World Cup will be movies on Friday night. Concerts on Saturday night. We have family fun days on Sundays. Basically, we're going to have this square activated with things for people to do," Estep said. Six weekends of live music are on the books through early September, all free, all starting at 5:30 p.m. and running until 9:

The August 22 date is not empty; it is where the biggest Saturday of the run lives. More on that below.
Two practical notes for residents. First, the mass timber shell projects sound better than most outdoor venues of this size, which means you can hear the show clearly from the perimeter without crowding the lawn. Second, because programming is booked on Saturdays only, if you keep a standing Sunday brunch or a Friday date-night reservation, none of this displaces you. It slots into the one weekend evening most households already leave open.
Friday Is the Movie Screen
If you have kids in the house, Friday is the more relevant column of the calendar. The lineup is family-weighted with one crossover for older audiences at the end of the run:

Screenings begin at 6 p.m., which means the picture does not actually start until dusk settles behind the storefronts. Plan on a 7:30-ish start most Fridays in August and slightly earlier as you get into September. Bring a blanket. The event lawn is not permanent seating.
Tuesday Still Anchors the Week
The Square gets attention because it is new. The reason the whole downtown loop works, though, is that the Renton Farmers Market is back on its home block after a year away. 2025 Season – Construction at Piazza Park prompts a temporary relocation of the market to Williams Avenue South. 2026 Season – The Farmers Market returns to Piazza Park.
That relocation and return is not a footnote. If you shopped the market last summer on Williams Avenue, you probably noticed it felt smaller, tighter, and more transactional. Piazza Park was designed for it. Join us each Tuesday, June - September 3:00-7:00pm For 25 seasons, the Renton Farmers Market has brought local farmers, fresh food, and friendly people together in the heart of our city. The market's twenty-fifth season runs Tuesdays 3 to 7 p.m. through September, with a sunset date of September 15 for shopping the harvest peak. On market days, the fun spills right into Legacy Square, so the Tuesday afternoon crowd and the weekend event crowd are drawing from the same pedestrian pattern rather than competing for it.
For residents, the takeaway is scheduling. If you were used to a Saturday morning market run, that reflex is out of date. Tuesday between school pickup and dinner is the new default, and the walk from Piazza across to the Square adds a stage set and a mini-pitch to what used to be a produce errand.
Two Standalone Saturdays Worth Marking
Two dates on the summer calendar deserve their own line on the fridge because they are not part of the weekly rhythm.
Art and Wine Block Party — Saturday, August 22, 12 to 8:30 p.m. Sip, stroll, and explore local creativity at this late-summer Wine & Art Block Party featuring art experiences, wine tastings, and fun for adults looking for an evening out. This is why there is no concert on August 22. The Square converts to a full-day event.
Harvest Festival Extravaganza — Saturday, September 19, 12 to 9 p.m. Harvest Festival Extravaganza: Saturday, September 19, 12 - 9 p.m. This one closes out the summer programming arc and lands the weekend after the Farmers Market's final Tuesday, which is smart calendar design if you notice it.
Where to Eat and Drink Without Leaving the Loop
The Square does not have permanent food and beverage. That is by design. It hands the crowd to the storefronts around it. A few that are directly relevant to the weekend rhythm:
Drum Roll Wine. VIP tickets include a special class prior to the event hosted by our local winery, Drum Roll Wine, in downtown Renton. Downtown's resident winery, and the anchor of the Downtown Partnership's wine walk programming.
The Berliner. In December the Renton Downtown Partnership is staging the World Cup group draw watch party there. Then march with us to The Berliner! After the celebration, we'll walk together to The Berliner for Renton's Official World Cup Draw Watch Party. If you have not been in since last winter, worth another look.
Rain City Market and the Renton Downtown Partnership are also behind the Cruz the Loop to downtown Renton! Gather and check-in at Legacy Square Park where live music, keychains for car participants, and cruz the loop merch throughout our Downtown Businesses. That is a car event, but the model is the point: the Square is being used as a check-in hub and the storefronts are the destination.
If you are keeping the evening free of alcohol, Luther's Table sits within the same walkable radius and hosts community programming on its own calendar.
Parking, Because You Are Going to Ask
Two blocks is walkable, but only if you get your car off the street cleanly the first time. Ten-hour free parking is available at Renton's City Center Parking Garage - enter on 2nd Street. The garage empties out fast after the Tuesday market and refills on Saturday evenings, so if you are planning a full Saturday that starts with a concert and ends with dinner, park once and walk.
The Programming Window Has an End Date
Worth calibrating expectations. The City of Renton invites community groups, artists, performers, and local organizations to activate Legacy Square with free, inclusive programming from July 20 to October 1, 2026. After October 1 the schedule thins out. The next event already on the calendar is Purple Light Nights on October 5, and from there the Square transitions into a quieter cool-weather role until holiday programming picks up in December with the World Cup group draw celebration and the Gobble Wobble Wine Walk cycle.
Which is another way of saying: the six weekends between now and September 19 are not a preview. They are the peak of the first full season this space will ever have. If you have been meaning to see what the fuss is about, the window is narrower than it looks.
For the Residents Who Have Been Here Longest
Downtown Renton has been talked about as a project for the better part of two decades. "In 2017, we gathered the community together, along with business owners and property owners, to create what's called the Civic Core Plan," Mayor Armondo Pavone said. "Which really is the investment in downtown Renton and creating kind of this pedestrian-friendly walkable neighborhood where commerce meets housing." Legacy Square is the built version of that plan. Whether it holds year-round energy is the open question. What is not in question is that the next six Saturdays are the best chance to see it working as intended.
